The Luckiest Ballerina

We had an enchanted Halloween! I hope you did, too.

In case there was ever any doubt about what a lucky little girl Giuliana is, I think yesterday cleared them all away. She was surrounded and adored by her very favorite people all day. Giuliana has some fantastic people in her life, and she is blessed for it.

The rain threatened, but ultimately held off until after our neighborhood Halloween parade. Our friends Kate and Nick (G's Godfather) and Giuliana's Nana joined us for the trek around the neighborhood. G was determined to walk the whole way...when she wasn't persuading "Uncle Nick" to "fly" her in the air (she's got mile-long eyelashes and knows how to use them!) The parade is sponsored by the West Endicott Volunteer Fire Department and the Ladies Auxillary. The firetrucks are out in all their bright red splendor and we gather at the station house at the end for cider, doughnuts, and, of course, candy. It's one of my very favorite things about the neighborhood.

After the parade and an irresistable romp in a pile of leaves, our exhausted ballerina took a break for some lunch and a rest.

We bundled up and braved the rain to Trick or Treat. We stopped over at Nick and Kate's house for a special Halloween treat then off to Nanni and Papa's for more holiday fun.

Finally, the "main event" of the evening. Nana's house for real Trick or Treating with her older cousins.

We got a little wet, but for the most part the rain held at bay. After the "short" circuit around the block the Luckiest Ballerina was pooped, her pumpkin was overflowing, and her ballet slippers were drenched. We walked back to Nana's while the other kids forged on, collecting massive amounts of candy at every stop. We dried off, changed into jammies, ate candy, and played with Nana and Grandpa until every one got back. The night dissolved into a chaos of scaring each other with ghost and goblins, tickling and running wild. A perfect end to a perfect Halloween.

Giuliana is a lucky girl. She is loved and adored. She is smart and funny and well-behaved and beautiful. As we were walking back to Nana's after Trick or Treating I reflected on how lucky, and blessed, that makes me. I could not ask for a better daughter. She is the joy of my life. She's got the world in her hands, can go anywhere and be anything she wants. She is joy and potential personified. She is love. And for a short time, she is mine. I suppose she'll always be mine. But not in the way she is now. And for right now, that makes me the luckiest mommy. I don't want to miss a second of this, this perfect moment.

Birthdays and Mansions and Nana, Oh My!

We had a great weekend.

Saturday morning I got up early and played with G. A little later I went for coffee and had a lovely time with a very cute (and pregnant, yippee!) friend…just the two of us, over coffee, on a Saturday morning! So Adult and stuff! Obviously, I don’t get enough of that in my life. Later Saturday afternoon my little family went shopping for birthday gifts for my 5 and 6 year old nieces (toy shopping! more fun!) and then decided to go out to eat (because even after that rant the other day, I didn’t feel like cooking…it’s a woman’s prerogative, shut up!) On Sunday we went to see my sister-in-law’s new house. Ummm, “Enchanted Fairytale Mansion” is not hyperbole in this case. The place is freaking HUGE and manse-like. From there it was over to Nana’s house for Sunday dinner and the birthday bash for the two little girls. Then home again for some football, baseball, crazy sugar-hyped toddler play (and a migraine, but we shall not discuss that) and bed.

The cutest part was the absolute transformation in Giuliana when she was around her cousins and her Nana. She was sorely missing her Nana on Saturday. G’s Nana is a World-Traveler. She goes on these exotic trips 2 or 3 times a year. This time it was Nimibia. For real, I’m not making this up. So G hasn’t seen her weeks (well, she saw her at the Pirate Dance Party last week, but with all the craziness there it wasn’t what she needed, I guess.) She kept wishing and hoping we were going to see Nana all day on Saturday. She actually started crying just before we went out to dinner and when I asked her what was wrong she just said, “Naaaaaaanaaaaa!” Clearly, even if it hadn’t been planned, a visit to Nana’s was in order.

And it was exactly what she needed. As I mentioned, before we headed over to Nana’s house we stopped by John’s sister’s new house. They were completing their final walk-through to close on Tuesday. You may remember that Gina was married this summer and she and her husband created this beautiful (and giant) blended family. But this (giant) family) has had to squeeze into Gina’s small house for the last several months as the mortgage process on the new house has been dragging along. Finally! Finally they are going to close on their new, big, Great Gatsby-style house. So we went to see it. Giuliana went a little nuts running around this ginormous empty house with her cousins. They raced around all four floors, in and out of rooms, up and down both the grand staircase and the “secret stairs” and all around the yard (or “The Grounds” as I insist on calling it.) She ran room to room shouting “Daaaaaaaaaaaaantttteeeeeeee, are you?????” as she and her cousin Dante played a toddler version of hide and seek. They danced and twirled on the dance floor in the basement. She ran circles around the fairy-tale “talking trees” outside, crunching through the beautiful fallen leaves (these trees have ceramic faces hung on them, in a slightly creepy but cool enchanted forest kind of way.) It was awesome. When Nana arrived a little later, G was so geared up she squealed and ran to hug Nana’s legs in her delight.

We all trooped back to Nana’s house and Giulana continued to run wild with her cousins. She had a fantastic time. She played “scary ghost” with 6 year old Sophia, running up to her and yelling “Boo!” to Sophia’s shrieks of mock terror. She climbed behind an armchair and giggled until someone walked by at which time she would jump up and shout at them. We got to sing “Happy Birthday” and blow out real candles on a real cake, just like we have been practicing at home. (G has a new favorite game. There is a picture of me from my 30th birthday blowing out the candles on my cake. G loves to dig through the photo album and find this picture. Then we sing “Happy Birthday” to whoever she chooses and then pretend to blow out the candles and cheer. Repeat, repeat, repeat.) And, of course, then we ate the cake…hence the sugar-hyped toddler previously mentioned.

It was a grand weekend. I absolutely adore seeing Giuliana so excited to see her family. She just has the best time with all of them. These are the moments I cherish.

Tutu=Jaws of Death

So, apparently, when you are three feet tall, yards of gathered fluffy pink tulle resemble the gaping maw of death waiting to swallow you up whole. Huh. Who'd've guessed it?

We greeted the much anticipated "Pretty Ballerina" tutu with shrieks, screams, tears...none related to happiness. This look? Is the look of fear and loathing.

I guess I have more brainwashing...I mean, desensitizing?, teaching?...something, to do before Oct. 31st. Because, I mean, MY GOD!! How unbelievably cute is she? She just has to love it soon, right?

Right now, she is being wooed with juice and popcorn. Hopefully this will help her make friends with the tutu. She DID do a spin for me in front of the mirror a few minutes ago. We are making progress.

****************
Edited to add: This is better. Much better. See what a little "harmless" brainwashing can accomplish. Oh, G, you're teaching Mommy all the wrong lessons....

Tiny Dancer

I have been pondering, since early September (I'm a planner, leave me alone!), what Giuliana should "be" for Halloween. Last year, her first Halloween, she had three costumes...it was Halloween all week at our house, and MAN! was she adorable. I didn't really have any grand ideas this year. (One year, and I'm out...spent it all on last year, I guess.) Oh, she'll be cute no matter WHAT she wears, in fact, she'd be cute as the bare-butt New Year's Baby, but at this age I'd probably get arrested (umm, and she'd freeze, so lose/lose, there.) I've been thinking and thinking. You know all the "good" costumes go quickly and I didn't want to wait too long.

So, the decision has been made and ordered. I've decided, much to her father's chagrin (hey, he didn't object until AFTER I order it...too late) that G will be a Pretty Ballerina this year. I went searching high and low for a costume, but couldn't find any I liked. Then I checked out actual dance costumes and guess what? I found them surprisingly reasonable! How nice. I quickly ordered her a little toddler-sized leotard, tutu, and little-bitsy ballet slippers! OOOOHH, the cuteness. It's freakin' palpable, I swear!

Now, here's the hang up. G is 22 months old. She doesn't really even know what a ballerina is, much less how to do a grande-plié. I figure I have about a month to propagandize the hell out of ballet. There will be a lot of Angelina Ballerina in our house in the next 31 days! I bought her a book about a dancing duck who wears a tutu, too (ha). And I have been pointing out dancers dancing at every chance I get. Yeah, I'm not above brainwashing my kid.

Last night her leotard and ballet slippers arrived in the mail. She fell in love with the slippers and insisted on wearing them all night. I think this is a good sign. God, I can't wait for that tutu to (haha) arrive. I may momentarily O.D. on the cuteness of her little toddler tush in a TUTU! With ballet slippers! I can't wait!

(Slightly Vague) Changes

Am I the only one who feels that Autumn always seems to be a season full of changes and growth? I've blogged about it before (exactly a year ago?...man, I'm becoming predictable!) Fall brings about a resumption of busy-ness, of getting back to routine. The crisp mornings and waning twilight always stir a homey feeling in me, a "nesting" sort of feeling that's in direct opposition to summery free-for-all. And that's a change. It always feels abrupt to me. Jarring in a way. This year, especially. We returned from the beach and were slapped with chilly winds and turning leaves before we even got our sandy beach toys out of the car. "Well, hello Autumn, I'm not sure I'm ready for you, but come on in."

One of the changes taking place this fall is in my family. The decision has been made. We've decided to add more snuggles, more giggles, more kisses and hugs. There (hopefully) will be more diapers and late night bottle sessions and bleary, chaotic mornings, too. No big announcement to make yet, it's a journey, this change. But I'll keep ya posted.

My career is going through a metamorphosis as well. Things are beginning to spin, faster and faster. I've been given the opportunity to take on some additional responsibilities that will send me out of town occasionally. Just to Albany. But the purpose is to "network" with other agencies around the state. Let's be kind and say that I'm not a natural "networker." This will be intimidating and a little awkward for me. But, it's all growth, right? Additionally, I will be leaving one aspect of my job behind and moving full-time into another. This is bitter-sweet for me. I've been in my current position for 5 1/2 years, working intimately with a few families and watching their kids grow. But I have been offered a bright future in the newer position and I must move forward. It's not a promotion, but it's a chance to expand my skills (like networking) and my prospects. How's that for vague? Sorry, that's all I feel I can say right now.

Of course, my daughter continues to change. It seems like the dictionary exploded at our house, lately. Everyday she comes up with new words, new inflections, sentences, questions and jokes. She's off and running, quite literally. All over the place. I can't keep track of her. She's everywhere, into everything, on top of everything. Learning at a frightening pace. This is a girl on the move, running headlong into her own bright future.

And last night offered me another opportunity for change. I've decided to hate the Buffalo Bills. Ok, not really. But they certainly tested my patience and devotion last night! Man! Take a knee, son! Stop giving games away! Ahhh, such is the life and agony of a Bills fan. It's gonna be a long season.

Her 1st Thanksgiving

(* I will post pictures as soon as I get them from my mother-in-law. I forgot my camera!)

I am more thankful than ever for my little family. I grow more and more in love with my husband every single day. He is so wonderful to me and such a natural, amazing father to our daughter. And that daughter? She is the absolute best gift I have ever been given in my life. I am so truly blessed with this family. Thank you. Thank you so much...

Giuliana had a BIG day yesterday! She had such a good time. We took the morning slow and she and I played till she went down for her nap. (Mommy participated in a nap as well.) Then we had to rush to get everyone ready to go to John's mom's. We were the LAST ones there!! John's dad beat us there. Anyway, Giuliana just had so much fun playing with her three cousins and just generally being the center of attention. She didn't eat much, she never does. But she did enjoy the pumpkin pie after I forced her to try it (I literally smeared some on her lips just to get her to lick it off. That's when she realized it wasn't poison and was actually pretty yummy. Why doesn't she just trust me and TRY whatever I am offering her? I don't get it.)

The big news is that she took several steps after dinner. Grandpa and Nana coaxed her to do it and she took 1 or 2 steps between them at least 4/5 times. She really got into it once everyone realized what she was doing and started to cheer her on! She is such a HAM. Her daddy was near tears. He is sooooooo not ready for her to start walking. I am really ok with it by now. She took a step and a half the other day in my office, too. She was standing near me, holding onto my leg and she wanted get into my desk drawer (one of her favorite passtimes at work) which was a few feet away. She let go and took 1 1/2 steps over to it...all without realizing what she was doing. I don't think she did it on purpose, she didn't look at me for approval or praise or anything, she just did it cause she wanted to get over there. She's amazing. I don't care that 6 billion people or whatever have learned to walk before....she is the most talented baby EVER, in my completely unbiased opinion.

Boo! It's Halloween!

So, our little bear had her first Halloween! She had a busy, busy, fun day. We started by trick or treating at work. Mostly, it was just a treat for all my co-workers to be surrounded by G's cute beariness all day :)

After work G and I went to Grandma and Grandpa's house. She got a real treat there...her first! Goldfishies!!

Next, on to Nana's house. More treats! Animal Crackers! Boy, these grandparents really know how to trick or treat it up right!

G even got to go trick or treating for real with her cousins. She actually really seemed to enjoy all the family chaos that surrounded the event, too. She was just giggling and shrieking as the other kids got all hyped up on candy...I mean, got ready to go out trick or treating. She had a regular ol' ball.

Do they make cuter children than this??? Huh?? I don't think so.

Today, we had some friends from work over for a "play date." M and her daughter E came over with M's husband A. (Got that, M, A and E.) E is 4 months old, so, ok there wasn't a whole lot of playing going on between E and G. But G enjoyed sharing her old bouncey seat that she doesn't fit in anymore. And she pointed out the baby's "eye!" and DIDN'T poke her in the eye, thank God!

John and A were able to comiserate. A has been going through the SAME MEDICAL NIGHTMARE! as John. Unbelievable! I think, in a twisted way, it really helps John to be able to talk to someone who completely understands his position.

M and I talked babies and mothering. E is soooo cute. And me, I forgot to take a pic! She is colicky, though, so M and A really have their hands full, especially since A is disabled by this abdominal pain. I hope I gave them some helpful advice and hope that E will outgrow this, and by 6 months they should be looking at a totally different kid! It's that Mama Circle thing I was talking about. It's pretty cool :)

Here is G, waiting, waiting for them to come over....

The Unbearable Cuteness of Giuliana

I apologize in advance. If you abhor maternal gloatings then look away. I am going to inundate you with Giuliana's cuteness all week because, well..., she's adorable and I just can't help myself. See the following pictures from today for proof.

A cutie with a whale-spout this morning, reading one of her favorite stories- "Gossie and Gertie."

Crazy hair at the end of the day, watching the dog outside. NOM, NOM, I just want to take a bite out of that cute tushie!

Oops, she caught me!

I don't know what THIS YELLING! was about.

We're ready for our walk...crazy hair securely hidden under a hood...G's first "bad hair day" look.

Fuzzy warm slippers. Thanks, Nana. They're from Turkey!

This is my view as we walk.

See, I told you. Stay tuned for more random acts of cuteness this week...she has lots of fun halloween costumes to entertain you with!

West Endicott Halloween Parade

When we moved to West Endicott, the bubbling mama in me was thrilled with two things in particular about the neighborhood: the park around the block and the Halloween Parade. For the last two years I have watched the parade and dreamed of the day my own children would participate. Today was that day!! YAY!! Gina brought her kids over and we all marched in the neighborhood parade, behind the fire trucks! Yipee!!

You get a sneak peak at G's Halloween costume. She is a scary bear! Roar!

And an adorable pumpkin jack o'lantern to top off the cuteness!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN WEEK!! BOO!

What a difference 10 months makes
